Did you make any New Year's resolutions? Have you taken any steps toward making them a reality?

January is the time of year that many of us reflect on the year past, and focus on the ahead. This is exactly what Stonewall year plans to do this month and next. We need to outline our priorities for 1993 and organize ourselves toward achieving them.

Our proposed, civil rights legislation has been delivered to City Hall and we will need to focus the community's support. We have met individually with Jay Westbrook, president of City Council, and Sam Thomas III, executive director of the Community Relations Board. We now need to implement a community awareness and educational program to assure the broadest level of support within our own community as well as the heterosexual communities. Our legislation goes beyond protection of sexual orientation, it also prohibits discrimination based on sex, race, religion, origin and disability.

In addition to developing the tactics for this educational campaign, Stonewall needs to replenish its ranks of volunteers, board members and officers. If your New Year's resolutions included getting more active in our community, we could help.

We will also discuss our plans for educational speakers, continued voter registration and the Second Annual Stonewall Pride Dinner to be held June 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Stouffer's Tower City Center (mark your calendar now).

Reflecting back on 1992, we accomplished a lot! We were part of a very successful voter registration effort that put

a much more favorable president in the White House. We held a very successful annual pride dinner in Stouffer's ballroom. We enjoyed seeing so many people wearing our stick-on slogans during the pride march, Dancin' and the picnic. We donated to the Center's renovation project. Perhaps more importantly, we finalized our recommended legislation and presented it to City Hall. Without the volunteers, board members and officers who donated their time, energy and talents, this would not have been possible. And it was never unusual to see many of the same faces at fundraisers and other highly visible community events.

If I can get personal for a moment... I've been vice president since Stonewall's first elections. And, I've had the opportunity and enormous pleasure to meet and volunteer alongside some terrific people. Some have been consistently active, others have donated their time as their schedules permitted. Others have kept their membership dues current, attended functions, signed petitions or gave personal testimony of discrimination. Each of these people has made an enormous impact on your life and mine!

Their work has always benefitted the welfare of gays and lesbians, in or out of the closet. Their ultimate goal is to help everyone to have the freedom to be themselves, without fear of harassment or harm. I am grateful to each of them!

In closing, I remind you that our February meetings are going to be very important. We need your help. Be a part of launching our awareness and educational campaign. Become a volunteer, board member or officer. Please plan to attend. Our meetings are held the first and third Mondays of each month, located at the Center on W. 29th, beginning at our new time, 7:00 p.m.
